History of the Trail System

The majestic San Juan Mountains are host to more than 75 miles of backcountry roads which create a web, connecting the main towns of Telluride, Ouray, Silverton, Ophir and Lake City. Many of these roads were ancient trails linking up Native American camps. When gold was struck in the region in the mid- 1800’s, the paths were expanded in order to be wide enough for the horse-drawn wagons. Additionally, prospectors and settlers had to build more roads to and from the mining sites as well as extending railroad lines to the area.  This rich history remains alive for visitors to the area who are fortunate enough to venture into the backcountry to experience it firsthand.
