About Ice Climbing

You've definitely heard of the sport of rock climbing, but the fun doesn't have to stop when those rocks become covered in ice during the winter season. Of course, other natural formations turn into solid sheets of ice, and you can also expect the opportunity to climb frozen waterfalls and various solid forms of fallen ice during this winter adventure.

Great Ways to Enjoy Ice Climbing

While early ice climbers didn't have the proper tools for a safe climb, that is no longer the case. You'll find several professional tour companies and businesses in and near Telluride that will provide you with an icy adventure that is positively thrilling and completely safe. These are just a few of the most popular companies that have been introducing the unique sport of ice climbing to visitors for many years.

1. San Juan Outdoor Adventures

Offering Telluride-based, quality adventures since 1981, this tour company is ready to introduce beginners to ice climbing and challenge those who are already familiar with the sport. Come experience the scenic beauty of the San Juan Mountains, and you'll have your choice of climbs at Bridal Veil Falls, Cornet Falls, Ames Falls and the Ames Ice Hose. To ensure that everyone is safe and receives individualized attention, each guide will take out groups of no more than four at a time. You'll be provided with all of the proper climbing equipment, transportation to and from the climb site and a digital photo of your adventure at the end of the day.

2. Telluride Ski Resort

Climbers may choose a half day or a full day of climbing, and the guides at this location are happy to work with parents who want to carefully introduce their children to this sport. Experienced ice climbers are encouraged to ask for a guide that will offer them a challenge. Several climbing sites are available, and these include Bridal Veil Falls and the Ames Ice Hose. Every ice climb is personalized to fit the individual needs of your group, and it's designed to be fun and comfortable for all skill levels. All participants will be provided with all of the proper climbing gear and transportation to and from the climb site.

3. Ouray Ice Park

In nearby Ouray, you'll find this fabulous park that is filled with more than 200 pure ice climbs and climbs that are mixed with ice and rock. Located in the beautiful Uncompahgre Gorge, each climbing structure was formed as a result of water being poured down the canyon walls in freezing temperatures. While this man-made ice park is completely free to the public, no climbing equipment or guides are available within the park. Visitors must come prepared with their own climbing gear and guide if needed.
