While this is the time of the year that skiing is the real star of the show in gorgeous Telluride, Colorado, it's still not too early to start thinking about all of those amazing festivals that are scheduled to be celebrated in the upcoming months. True film enthusiasts are encouraged to start making their plans right now for the immensely popular, upcoming Telluride Film Festival.
Plan Early for the Film Festival
Though the 43rd annual Telluride Film Festival isn't scheduled to be held until Sept. 2-5, you can get your official passes as early as March. Since this is an event that tends to experience an early sellout, true film lovers will want to lock in their reservations as early as possible.
Passes are available in a range of prices that begin at $390 and go all the way up to $3,900, which allows for a $1,900 tax-deductible donation. Each pass includes access to the yearly party that is held on opening day and to the Labor Day picnic.
What to Expect
Screenings of more than 50 unique films will be shown at 10 separate venues throughout Telluride over the extended Labor Day weekend. Both lovely Town Park and Mountain Village, which is accessible only by a free gondola ride, are among the locations where films will be screened.
Every genre of film will be represented, and you'll have the opportunity to view a wonderful selection that includes newly restored silent films with a live orchestral accompaniment, unseen films of Walt Disney, classic film restorations, brand new films by talented, upcoming filmmakers and special selections by the guest director. This year's guest director has yet to be announced, but you can expect someone special when you consider that the likes of Salman Rushdie, Peter Sellars and Edith Kramer have all enjoyed the spot of guest director in past years.
Be the First
While you never know what you may see until you arrive at the Telluride Film Festival, history dictates that you'll be the first to see some films that will turn out to be hugely successful. You're sure to enjoy being the first audience to decide for yourself which films will make it to the top. These are just a few of the many films that have been screened first in Telluride before going on to become major, award-winning blockbuster movies.
- Slumdog Millionaire
- Brokeback Mountain
- Blue Velvet
- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
- The King's Speech
- Stranger Than Paradise
- El Norte
- The Last Station
- El Mariachi
- Bowling For Columbine
- The Last King of Scotland
- Talk to Her
It's also early enough in the year to sign up to participate in the making of this successful film festival. Production apprentice positions and volunteers are needed for all aspects of the festival, and applications are now being accepted for the Student Symposium. Those who are in love with films will be the first to be considered for any of these exciting positions.
