Local’s Knowledge: Hiking from Town… (PART ONE)

Summer is BACK, and so is hiking in Telluride! We’re excited to dust off our hiking boots and hit the trails. Whether you’re looking for an easy way to see town, trying to get in a workout with a view, or looking for a real aerobic challenge, you’re sure to find the perfect trail for you – many start right here in the Town of Telluride!

Ajax Peak
Distance: 2.5 miles Each Way; Elevation Gain: 2785 feet
This difficult, 4 hour trip from the base of the power plant will lead you through grass switchbacks to the summit of Ajax peak where you’ll find panoramic views into the valley, overlooking the Town of Telluride. Take the HIKE.

Ballard Boardinghouse
Distance: 7 miles round trip; Elevation Gain: 3320 feet
An extremely difficult trail, with snow remaining into the summer months, this hike is recommended for only the most advanced hikers. Plan at least 6 to 8 hours round trip for this hike leading to the peak of Ballard Mountain and spectacular views. Take the HIKE.

Bear Creek Trail
Distance: 2.5 miles each way; Elevation Gain: 1050 feet
Arguably one of the most popular trails, this hike can be accessed from the bottom of South Pine Street and leads to the breathtaking upper Bear Creek Falls. Take the HIKE.

Blue Lake
Distance: 5.25 round trip; Elevation Gain: 2000 feet
Accessible from the top of Bridal Veil Falls, this trail passes through fields of wildflowers, ending above tree line at beautiful Blue Lake. Take the HIKE.

Bridal Veil Falls
Distance: 1.8 miles one way; Elevation Gain: 1650 feet
The tallest free falling water falls in Colorado at 365 feet long in Colorado, Bridal Veil Falls are enough to encourage many to hike the 1.2 miles to the bottom of the falls and the extra .6 miles to the top. Take the HIKE.

Cornett Falls
Distance: .25 miles one way
Begin at the Jud Wiebe trail head at the north end of Aspen Street for this short, but rewarding hike along Cornett Creek, eventually ending at Cornett Falls, a breathtaking and refreshing site for many hikers. Take the HIKE.

Idarado Legacy Trail
Distance: 1.75 miles one-way; Elevation Gain: 320 feet
Begin this trail from Telluride Town Park and follow the San Miguel River Trail onto the Idarado Legacy Trail peppered with informative plaques along the way. Take the HIKE.

Jud Wiebe Trail Distance: 3 mile loop; Elevation Gain: 1140 feet
From the north end of Aspen Street, begin this moderate to difficult trail. Head across grassy mountainsides, through wooded areas and enjoy views of Telluride along the way. Take the HIKE.
